Elderflower ice cream in autumn / Holundereis im Herbst

Last week and  over the past weekend I was so productive, I need to catch up now. This is a double post coming as a culinary melange par excellence. It's been chilly but lovely today. When I took these photos the church bells rang 7 p.m. and the sun still hit the trees behind our house and bathed them in a golden light. I was standing in the dark so the photos are still crappy. Since this was such a sunny day, we're having ice cream this evening. Elderflower ice cream (= Sureau Gelato). Mmmh.

So, I made a jacket and I'm as proud as I can be. I was looking for a simple jacket pattern for aaaaages and couldn't decide on any. I had bought this black fabric in the super-summer sale at my local store for 1 Euro per meter. Yes, you heard right. It's laminated on the inside and very soft, almost velvety on the outside. When the days became colder I decided to try this pattern from German "CUT Magazin".

The Gelato jacket has overlapping front parts which are closed with poppers. It's not supposed to be lined at all but I decided to double the hood to have nice side of the fabric also inside the hood. The hood and the bottom seam have a string to give the jacket a bit more shape. The fabric didn't fray at all but since I couldn't give it any pressing I top-stitched every seam allowance to make it lay flat.

The pattern is generally very easy and it came with a very detailled instruction. Only the sleeves very poorly drawn. The shoulder edge hit at the middle of my upper arm, which is often the case because I have narrow shoulders. It's the same on the model in the magazine so I first thought this was how it's meant to be. The sleeves had so much ease though that they shaped a huge bulb, which I don't want right on my upper arm. After thinking about what to do a (sleepless) night, I just cut the arm holes on the finished jacket so the seam hit on the edge of my shoulder. Now, with the much bigger hole, the sleeve went in smoothly and the jacket fits perfectly. Yay! I'm very happy that I now have a jacket with long enough sleeves (I added 3 centimetres) for my monkey limbs.

The elderflowers are hidden under my new jacket - a dress using the lovely Sureau pattern by Deer & Doe. My autumn sewing plans included this pattern and I wanted to use some cosy flanell fabric. This is their marriage.

Hier is et nun.

The pattern fit right out of the envelope, except that I had to make the shoulders a little bit narrower, which is a standard for me now. The fabric is a really soft and warm flannel, also from my local dealer.

This dress is so comfortable, it's like wearing a pyjama all day. I showed it to my boyfriend before seaming the skirt and he called it "granny style". So I made the dress really short to proove him wrong. I really like it like this.

The detail picture shows two changes I made to the pattern. I added black piping on both sides if the button placket and I added small cuffs to the sleeves. I think it's cuter with the cuffs and the sleeves don't ride up all the way when I put on a cardi. The buttons are really cute and a perfect match for the fabric.

I'm almost 100% pleased with how the dress turned out, except the horrible pattern matching where the bodice and skirt meet (I didn't try it with placket even). The skirt would have been long enough to redo the seam, but I ignored the problem until I had finished all seam allowances together and had added the side zipper. Don't know why I did that but it really makes me angry at myself. Well, I have to make it better with my second Sureau. And this will definitely happen!
